Australian Michael White first came to Bali
as an architecture student, aged 20 years, in 1973. He swam ashore from
his 35 foot ketch and immediately knew hwe would never leave.
By 1975 he had a new name, Made Wijaya, and a Balinese family, with whom he lived for ten years, and jobs coaching tennis and teaching english. He love for the local culture and his gift for languages led him jobs guiding travellers like Sir David Attenborough, Barone cecile de rothschild and Sir Hardy Amies. They encouraged him to start a diary of his unique life as a "new-Balinese" which led to a position with the Sunday Bali Post as coloumnist in 1978-1980. They were incredible years for Wijaya, and for Bali, and his book is an extraordinary pictorial historyof that time. |
